Reticulocyte (NMB+)
- Examine the field at 1000× magnification (oil immersion)
- Count reticulocytes (blue cells with dark granules) in the large square
- Count all RBCs (including reticulocytes) in the small square
- Apply edge rule: Don't count cells touching bottom/right edges of small square
- Calculate percentage using the formula: Retics in large square × 100 ÷ (RBCs in small square × 9)
- Count minimum 2,000 cells for adequate precision (multiple fields)
